Wettlaufer was raised in Woodstock, Ontario. She gained a bachelor’s degree in religious education counselling in the mid-eighties and went on to study nursing at Conestoga College.
Whilst working at a care home in Woodstock she injected patients with insulin and in 8 cases the amount injected was enough to kill the patient. She left the care home in 2014 but went on to kill three more victims with insulin overdoses.
In September 2016 Wettlaufer was a patient at a drug rehabilitation programme when she confessed to staff she had killed some patients and tried t kill others. The matter as reported to Toronto Police. She had apparently told a lawyer about her actions prior to confessing to drug tratement staff but the lawyer told her to keep it a secret.
Wettlaufer pleaded guilty to 8 charges of murder and 6 of attempted murder on June 1st 2017. Later that month she was sentenced to eight life sentences with no possibility of parole for 25 years.
