Vann was born in Indiana. He was married for 16 years to a woman who was much older than him. He was sentenced to five years for a sexual assault that took place in in 2007 and was released in 2013.
He joined the US Marines in 1991 but received an “other than honourable” discharge in 1993.
Afrikka Hardy was found dead in a bath in a hotel room in October 2014. Anith Jones was reported missing around the same time. When Vann was arrested on suspicion of the murder of Hardy, Vann took police to an abandoned house in Gary, Indiana, where ones’ body was found.
The bodies of the other 5 victims were found in October 2014 in abandoned houses. The earliest of the victims had been reported missing in January that year.
When Hardy’s body was found, Vann was identified through her pone records. He was found to have some of her property including her mobile phone. He confessed t the killing and admitted the others during interview.
The death penalty was sought but in a plea bargain, Vann agreed to plead guilty to all charges provided he avoided the death penalty. He was sentenced to seven life sentences without the possibility of parole on May 25th 2018.
