Arshad was a taxi driver from Cheadle Hulme in Manchester, married to Uzma, they had three children, 11, 8 & 6.
One night in July 2006, Arshad confronted his wife about an alleged affair she was having with a married man. He used a £1.99 children’s rounders bat he had purchased the previous day. She suffered 23 blows to the head and body.
One by one he then took his three children downstairs where he bludgeoned them to death.
Following the killings he drove his wife’s BMW to the airport where he left for a trip to Thailand.
The bodies were not discovered for 3 weeks after a neighbour noticed smells coming from the house.
Arshad returned from Thailand voluntarily. He admitted to police that he had killed his wife but said it was in anger after discovering that she had murdered the children herself.
The jury were not convinced of his story and he was convicted for all four murders at his trial in May 2007. He was told by the judge that life would mean life and he would never be freed. He said: “The jury have convicted you on overwhelming evidence … You killed your entire family in circumstances of great brutality. You beat your wife to death in her bedroom and then coldly and deliberately you brought your sleepy children downstairs to meet their deaths. You left the scene and fled the country. It was over three weeks before the bodies were discovered. There is no suggestion of mental illness on your part.”
